Ruined Castle Keep Inside Asyut Train Terminal

by Carl Roach

Bright noon light floods the interior of a restored train terminal near Asyut, illuminating a stark, roofless castle keep standing in the center of the vast hall. Heavy overcast skies outside diffuse the glare into a flat, even brightness that washes the stone walls in pale, dusty tones. The open sky above the keep reveals no roof structure, only the white expanse of the clouds pressing against the upper masonry. Vibrant energy pulses through the space where colorful, traditional Egyptian textiles hang from the terminal's high arches, against the weathered, crumbling grey stone of the fortress. Sunlight reflects off the polished floor tiles, bouncing between the massive pillars and the ancient masonry. A deep shadow falls across the base of the keep, at the base of the structure against the bright, patterned floor.
