Drying Peat Slabs on Wire Fence After Rain in across a floodplain after rain in Queensland

Drying Peat Slabs on Wire Fence After Rain

by Roland Nixon

Saturated earth tones cover the Queensland floodplain where rectangular slabs of cut peat lean against a wire fence. Wet ground from a recent sun shower creates a glassy surface that mirrors the slabs and the fence above. Soft blue light from the twilight sky reflects off the standing water, casting a cool, even glow across the rough, fibrous texture of the drying peat. Moisture glistens on the fence wires and the waterlogged soil. The flat horizon line separates the wet earth from the fading sky, showing the scale of the geologic material. One slab reflects the deep indigo of the evening sky, its surface rippled by the water beneath it.
