Peat Slabs Drying on Wire Fence in Monaco Bog

by Betty Esparza

Wet, dark brown peat slabs rest in neat rows along a thin wire fence stretching across a low-lying bog. The ground beneath is spongy and saturated, reflecting the bright late-afternoon sun in glossy patches where recent rain has pooled. Early winter light strikes the scene from a high angle, casting short, sharp shadows that define the rough, fibrous texture of the drying earth. Humid air hangs heavy over the waterlogged surface, making the colors appear deep and saturated. The wire fence cuts a straight, metallic line against the organic chaos of the bog, holding the rectangular blocks in place as they slowly lose moisture. At the edge of the frame, a single slab tilts slightly, its rough edge catching the light against the dark, wet moss below.
