Weathered Salt Block in Victorian Paddock in along a muddy paddock fence in Victoria

Weathered Salt Block in Victorian Paddock

by Christine Morrow

Mud stains the lower third of a massive white salt block standing firm against a wire fence line. Cattle hooves have worn the surrounding grass into a dark, churned trough where the earth meets the block's base. The sky glows with low sunset light that wraps the horizon in soft orange and purple hues. Rain has left the soil slick and reflective, mirroring the fading sky in puddles scattered near the fence. Layers of depth stretch backward through the paddock, showing distant fence posts fading into the humid twilight. The salt surface shows rough, pitted textures from licking and weathering, against the smooth, wet mud clinging to the block's sides.
