Uphill Water Flow on Sahara Dune in Reykjavik Dawn

by Vanessa Craft

Soft overcast light washes a sharp dune crest where fine orange sand meets a landscape of black volcanic gravel near Skolavordustigur. A thin stream of clear water defies gravity, climbing the steep slope of the desert ridge instead of descending. The liquid gathers in a small, perfect pool resting at the very highest point of the dune. Gentle rain creates a sheen on the wind-carved ridges, highlighting the contrast between the warm desert grain and the cold, wet stone. Layers of depth recede into a hazy horizon where the impossible water trail ends abruptly against the sky.
