Dogsled Team Crosses Serengeti Causeway in on a wind-open causeway in the Serengeti

Dogsled Team Crosses Serengeti Causeway

by Abigail McConnell

Deep shadows cloak the backs of a dogsled team moving across a wind-swept causeway in the Serengeti. Before dawn, the sky holds a faint, charged gray while a sharp rim light cuts through the dark, outlining the harnesses and the fur of the sled dogs. The ground beneath the runners is a mix of hard-packed earth and scattered dry grass, glistening slightly where storm water has receded. Dust hangs low in the still air, catching the first hints of illumination. The dogs' muscles tense under the harnesses as they pull the sled forward, their breath visible in the cool air. A thin trail of snow dust rests on the rear runner, marking the path just taken.
