Dog Sled Team Departing Checkpoint Dawn Light
by Kendra West
Cold silver dawn light spills across a pristine expanse of fresh snow near Oslo, illuminating a team of sled dogs in mid-motion. The animals strain forward, their dark fur contrasting sharply against the pale, undisturbed powder. Behind them, the wooden runners of the sled carve deep tracks into the white surface. The sky above is a flawless, pale blue, devoid of clouds, stretching down to the horizon where the first hint of morning softens the air. The dogs' ears are pricked forward, muscles taut with alert tension as they pull the harnesses tight. Their breath hangs visible in the cool air, forming small, white clouds that dissipate quickly. The team moves away from wooden checkpoint markers, their paws churning the snow with purposeful force. Frost forms on the tips of the nearest dog's nose, glistening in the early light.
