Snowplow Crossing Salt Flats at Dawn in beside a fogbound harbor mouth in Alberta

Snowplow Crossing Salt Flats at Dawn

by Ruben McLaughlin

A heavy snowplow moves across the cracked, white expanse of the salt flats, its bulk defined by a sharp rim of pale light cutting through the deep shadow of the foreground. The machine travels parallel to the fogbound harbor mouth in Alberta, where low-hanging clouds merge with the flat horizon in a seamless wash of grey and white. Thin streaks of light pierce the haze above, illuminating the texture of the salt crust and the dust kicked up by the tires. Leading lines formed by the vehicle's path and the distant shoreline guide the gaze toward the open water. The arctic summer light remains cool and diffuse, casting long, soft shadows that stretch across the uneven ground. A faint reflection of the sky glimmers on a wet patch of salt near the plow's rear tire.
