Crown Jellyfish in Zanzibar Seagrass Light

by Avery Hudson

Soft afternoon rain leaves the water clear yet filled with a fine plankton haze that blurs the distant seagrass meadow. A crown jellyfish drifts centrally, its translucent bell pulsing with rhythmic undulation. Sunlight cuts a vertical shaft through the blue-green column, illuminating the delicate trailing tentacles and the intricate radial canals within the umbrella. The creature hovers just above the swaying green blades of the Zanzibar seagrass, casting a faint, shifting shadow on the sandy bottom. Water droplets rest on the surface tension of the bell, catching the muted light. at the edge is a cluster of microscopic particles swirling in the illuminated current near the jellyfish's oral arms.
