Rooster Crowing Upside Down in Water Ceiling

by Marc Donovan

Soft gray dawn light falls through low-hanging clouds near Bugis, Singapore, illuminating a rooster perched on a weathered wooden fence. The bird stands in sharp silhouette, beak open mid-crow, feathers detailed against the pale sky. Below the bird, the ground transforms into a mirror-like surface of water, reflecting the entire scene upside down. The rooster's inverted image hangs from a ceiling made of liquid, its comb and tail feathers mirrored perfectly in the fluid surface. Wet concrete pavement borders the fence, glistening with morning moisture. One droplet rests on the edge of the fence, suspended between the real bird and its watery reflection. The impossible ceiling of water holds the rooster's silhouette in a perfect, inverted embrace.
