Courthouse Staircase Paradox in Paramaribo Rain

by Abraham Shah

Flat municipal daylight illuminates the pale stone facade of a Paramaribo polling station, where television cables drape heavily across the entrance like dark vines. The dry season air leaves the wet stone slick, reflecting the heavy overcast sky above. A central landing defies gravity, splitting into two staircases that ascend and descend from the exact same step. One flight climbs toward the darkened doorway while the other plunges into the shadowed ground, both constructed of the same weathered concrete. Television cables hang low, obscuring the upper signage and creating a tangled web against the white walls. The impossible geometry stands rigid and matter-of-fact, with water droplets clinging to the railing edges where the two directions meet.
