Cotton Bolls Under Noon Sun Near Kamsar

by Julie Benitez

Bright white cotton bolls burst open against stiff green stalks under the unyielding flat glare of midday. Low-lying fog pools in the depressions between rows, clinging to the damp earth where the rainy season keeps the soil heavy. The foreground fibers stand out with sharp, fuzzy texture, while the background blurs into a soft wash of muted greens and grays. Heavy clouds hang low, diffusing the harsh light just enough to reveal the weathered resilience of the plants. A stray leaf, curled and brown at the edges, rests on a stem near the bottom right corner.
