Dark Plowed Field Before Spring Planting

by Robin Kemp

Rich, dark soil forms deep, parallel ridges across a vast expanse, waiting for the spring thaw. Dry, straw-colored hay bales stack in rough rows along the field's edge, their woven texture against the loose earth. Late afternoon light casts long shadows between the furrows, highlighting the rough, clumpy surface of the ground. Above, a sky filled with dramatic, heavy clouds stretches across the horizon, their undersides dark gray against patches of pale blue. The air appears still and dry, showing the dormant state of the land. One clod of earth rests on the edge of the nearest furrow, catching the fading sunlight.
