Copper Ghosts in Abandoned Tokat Brewery Ruins

by Marilyn Pugh

Deep shadow swallows the interior of a derelict fermenting room near Tokat, where late summer heat lingers against cold stone. Copper vessels, now tarnished to a dull bronze, hang from rusted iron hooks along the rough masonry walls. Fine dust coats every surface, settling in thick layers on the curved metal sheets and the cracked concrete floor. A sharp rim of evening light cuts across the upper right corner, illuminating the texture of peeling plaster and the pitted surface of the copper ghosts. The light defines the edges of the vessels against the darkness, highlighting the scale of the decay. One patch of sunlight hits a broken pipe near the ground, revealing the rough grain of the wood beneath the grime.
