Green Copper Stills in Late Night Distillery in beside a blast furnace near Regina

Green Copper Stills in Late Night Distillery

by Haley Yu

Late spring twilight settles over a forsaken whisky distillery beside a blast furnace near Regina. Copper pot stills, oxidized to deep verdigris, stand in rows under the glow of low tungsten light filtering through dirty windows. The yellow-orange beams cut across the gritty floor, illuminating floating dust and highlighting the rough texture of peeling paint on brick walls. Leading lines formed by rusted pipes and metal walkways draw toward the dark rear of the room. The clear night air outside contrasts with the heavy, still interior. A final streak of light catches the curved rim of a still, marking the edge of the metal against the shadowed floor.
