Ceilidh Band Performing in Glasgow Ceremonial Hall
by Leon Griffin
Amber sodium-vapor light washes over the polished wooden floor of a Glasgow ceremonial hall where a ceilidh band plays. The musicians, dressed in dark wool and tweed, stand before a high stone wall adorned with heavy tapestries. Through tall arched windows, the wet cobblestones of the street reflect the soft orange glow of the city dusk. A light drizzle streaks the glass, blurring the distant streetlamps into vertical smears of white and yellow. The room hums with the presence of seated listeners, their faces illuminated by the warm, uneven lighting. Dust motes float in the beams cutting across the room, catching the light near the fiddles and drums. at the edge is a single raindrop tracing a slow path down the center of a window pane, distorting the view of the wet street beyond.
