Caribou Stag Crossing Mud Flats at Dusk in at the edge of a reed bed near Prayagraj

Caribou Stag Crossing Mud Flats at Dusk

by Malcolm Avery

Deep shadow swallows the lower body of a massive caribou stag as it strides across wet, dark mud flats. A sharp rim of twilight light traces the curve of its antlers and the ridge of its spine, separating the animal from the gloom. The stag's muscles tense under thick, early autumn fur while wind whips strands of hair across its flank. Behind its hooves, deep impressions mark the soft, glistening surface of the mud, stretching back toward a dense bed of reeds. The reeds bow violently to the left, their dried golden stalks blurring in the gust. Low angle perspective emphasizes the creature's height against the fading sky, ending with a close view of a muddy hoof lifting from a slick, reflective puddle.
