Bombardier Beetle Sprays Defense Fog in near Mazatlan

Bombardier Beetle Sprays Defense Fog

by Caitlin McKenzie

Cool morning mist pools in the low crevices of volcanic rock, creating a soft white carpet beneath the subject. A large bombardier beetle stands on the rough, gray surface, its black exoskeleton gleaming with moisture. From the tip of its abdomen, a visible jet of white vapor erupts, expanding instantly into the humid air. The beetle's legs grip the uneven stone firmly as it directs the defensive spray away from its body. Behind the insect, a dense wall of green tropical foliage rises, blurred slightly by the shallow depth of field. Sunlight falls through the canopy above, casting dappled highlights on the wet stones and the rising plume of vapor. at the edge is the fine mist clinging to the beetle's antennae.
