Aerial View of Braided Glacial River Laos

by Caitlin Jimenez

Pale milky water splits into a complex network of channels across a wide riverbed, the flow heavy with suspended glacial silt. The light from high noon strikes the surface with a flat, unyielding glare, washing out shadows and turning the water into a sheet of opaque cream. Soft, white fog drifts low over the water, partially obscuring the distant banks where terraced hillsides rise in stepped layers of brown earth and green vegetation. The scale is vast, showing the intricate geometry of the braided streams weaving between gravel bars. At the edge of the frame, a narrow strip of dark soil marks the boundary between the churning river and the solid ground.
