Malaysian River Braiding Through Gravel Before Sunrise in along a wave-cut shoreline in Malaysia

Malaysian River Braiding Through Gravel Before Sunrise

by Vicki Santana

Pale dawn light breaks the horizon haze, casting a soft glow over a wide gravel floodplain in Malaysia. Several shallow river channels braid across the stony ground, their surfaces rippling under the force of wind that whips the water into fine whitecaps. The wet stones reflect the cool sky, shifting from grey to pale violet where the water meets the sand. In the distance, layers of the shoreline recede, revealing the wave-cut edge of the land. The wet season has left the banks saturated, with tufts of grass bending sharply against the breeze. A dark line of vegetation marks the far bank, standing still against the moving water. at the edge is a single ripple spreading outward across a smooth stone near the foreground edge.
