Autumn Tea Terraces Over Salt Ponds

by Joanne Strickland

Rust-colored tea bushes form stepped terraces that cascade toward a vast expanse of shallow salt ponds. The late morning light falls through a soft, overcast sky, casting a gentle, diffused glow across the layered landscape. Patches of light fog rest on the water's surface, blurring the boundary between the earth and the horizon. Causeways of pale gray stone cut straight lines through the brackish water, against the organic curves of the vegetation. The autumn season is evident in the muted gold and ochre hues of the leaves, which stand out against the cool blue-gray tones of the ponds. In the distance, the terrain flattens into a hazy white void where the sky meets the earth. One shadow from a low bush falls across the wet, reflective surface of a nearby pond.
