Adjusting Shutter in Kyoto
by Jenny Palmer
Mist rests on the narrow stone lane of Gion, softening the edges of traditional machiya facades as a lone worker in a navy blue happi coat adjusts a bamboo lattice shutter. The damp morning light catches the sheen of wet cobblestones, reflecting the muted tones of the surrounding wooden architecture. Near the entrance, a faded indigo noren curtain hangs still, its fabric worn at the hem by years of use. A small ceramic bowl sits on a low wooden step, holding fresh green tea leaves that contrast sharply with the grey mist. In the background, the silhouette of a wooden cart rests against a stone wall, its wheels damp with dew.
