Pausing Customer in Kyoto

by Genevieve Schultz

Under the deep indigo wash of Kyoto’s blue hour, a narrow alleyway in Gion glows with the warm, amber spill from a small izakaya window. The frame shows a candid moment of urban life where the cool twilight contrasts sharply with the inviting interior light. A wooden lattice screen, typical of machiya architecture, frames the right side, while wet pavement reflects the neon signage above. Inside the visible portion of the shop, enamel bowls are stacked near the entrance, hinting at the meal service within. Outside, a customer in a dark cardigan pauses to adjust a straw hat, their silhouette softened by the misty air.
