Kitchen Window in Kyoto
by Bjorn Finch
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Kyoto midday, a narrow alleyway between traditional machiya houses reveals a glimpse into daily life. A wooden lattice window is propped open, revealing a cluttered interior workspace where a blue and white porcelain bowl rests on a scarred counter next to a ceramic ladle. Outside, the damp stone pavement reflects the gray sky, while dappled leaf shadows from a nearby maple tree stretch across the plaster wall, creating a textured interplay of light and dark. A passerby in a dark raincoat pauses briefly, their reflection faintly visible in the glass pane, adding a transient human element to the quiet, lived-in scene.
