Dyed Fabric in Kyoto

by Ezra Franks

Cool early morning light falls through the lattice windows of a traditional machiya in Kyoto, casting long, sharp geometric shadows across a worn wooden counter. An elderly shopkeeper, her hands stained with indigo dye, carefully arranges freshly dyed fabric strips into a woven mending basket, the texture of the hemp rough against her skin. Outside the open shoji screen, a single paper lantern hangs limp on a bamboo pole, its orange glow fading against the blue-grey dawn. The air is still, save for the subtle movement of steam rising from a small ceramic saucer holding green tea, its surface reflecting the muted light.
