Worn Cattle Salt Block Station in Nebraska Rain

by Renee Howell

A rough-hewn gray salt block sits half-submerged in churned mud beside a wooden pasture gate. Steady rain creates a sheen on the block's surface and ripples across the puddles surrounding its base. The ground around the station is deeply eroded into a bowl shape by repeated hoof traffic, exposing dark, wet soil beneath the sparse green grass of late spring. Dappled light falls through overhanging tree branches, casting shifting patches of brightness and shadow across the wet earth. Raindrops strike the salt surface, leaving temporary indentations that fill instantly. A few scattered leaves rest on the muddy edges, caught in the flow of water running off the block. The wooden gate posts stand weathered and gray, framing the worn station against the backdrop of a damp, gray pasture.
