Winter Plow Resting in Russian Far East Field in across a harvested grain field in the Russian Far East

Winter Plow Resting in Russian Far East Field

by Brenda Buck

Low-hanging gray clouds press against the horizon where the sun dips below the flat, harvested expanse of the Russian Far East. A heavy iron plow lies abandoned across the dark, cloddy soil, its rusted metal catching the final amber glow of twilight. Hundreds of black crows cluster around the machinery and scattered stubble, their dark forms contrasting sharply with the pale, dead winter grass. The ground appears frozen and uneven, with deep furrows stretching into the distance under the heavy sky. The metal surface of the plow reflects the fading light, while the birds huddle close to the earth, creating a dense texture of feathers and dirt that fills the foreground before the field recedes into the gloom.
