Winter Cotton Fields Above Damascus Wadis
Pale rows of harvested cotton stalks stretch across the frame, their bleached white stubble against the ochre earth below. The terrain undulates gently into dry wadis that cut through the landscape like pale scars. Above the ground, a faint heat shimmer distorts the horizon line, blurring the separation between the arid soil and the soft, overcast sky. The late afternoon light casts a diffuse, even glow that eliminates harsh shadows, revealing the texture of the soil and the sparse, dormant vegetation. The composition places the fields in the lower third, leaving the upper two-thirds to the vast, hazy sky. A subtle gradient of dust hangs low, clinging to the surface of the dry riverbeds in the distance.
