Wasps Mandibles Wood Fiber Tree Flower

by Dwight Case

Tropical bright light illuminates the jagged, amber-and-black mandibles of a wasp pressed against rough wood fiber. A frame of woven branches encloses the insect, creating a natural aperture. Through this opening, a singular flower blooms at the canopy height of a towering tree, defying scale while remaining grounded in the dry season landscape. Light fog softens the distant horizon where the impossible bloom stands. The wasp's chitin reflects the midday sun with sharp highlights. Tiny wood splinters catch the light near the mandible tips. A shadow from the branch frame falls across the insect's lower jaw, at the base of the surreal giant flower in the immediate foreground.
