Virga Curtain Over Brussels At Dusk

by Jasmine Baxter

A dark, heavy sheet of cirrostratus clouds dominates the upper horizon, releasing faint, ghostly trails of virga that evaporate before touching the ground. Below, the Brussels skyline emerges from deep shadow, punctuated by the warm, yellow glow of streetlamps and building windows. A sharp rim light cuts across the cloud base, separating the grey masses from the darkening sky. Early autumn leaves on the foreground trees show hints of russet and brown against the cool blue of the evening. The city lights create a scattered pattern of orange dots beneath the vast, moody expanse of falling rain that never arrives. The texture of the evaporating rain streaks appears soft and diffuse, against the solid, geometric lines of the distant buildings.
