Trullo Houses in San Miguel Train Terminal Twilight

by Sharon Choi

Cool indigo light fills the restored train terminal in San Miguel de Allende, where a cluster of traditional Trullo stone houses stands under heavy overcast skies. The conical roofs, built from local grey limestone, rise sharply against the darkening ceiling of the industrial space. Rain beads on the rough-hewn walls, darkening the stone surfaces to a deep charcoal. Wide arched windows frame the wet pavement outside, where puddles reflect the faint, charged glow of distant streetlamps. The massive steel trusses of the terminal loom overhead, casting long, geometric shadows across the dry, whitewashed plaster of the Trulli structures. Water drips steadily from the eaves, pooling on the flagstone floor in rhythmic, shallow circles. One wet leaf rests against the base of the leftmost dome, caught in the stillness of the late-night hour.
