Toymaker Painting Wooden Horse in Ningbo

Thick mist softens the edges of an old quarter workshop in Ningbo while crisp high-altitude light cuts through the haze. An over-the-shoulder view reveals a toymaker’s weathered hands guiding a fine brush across the curved flank of a wooden horse. The timber shows deep grain and the smooth texture of years of sanding, waiting for layers of red lacquer. Behind the figure, rough-hewn shelves hold unfinished carvings and jars of pigment. Late autumn chill hangs in the air, visible in the stillness of the dust motes suspended in the light beams. The brush tip touches the wood, leaving a wet, glossy trail of crimson paint that catches the pale afternoon sun.
