Polishing Wood in Chiang Mai

Bright winter noon light slices through the open front of a Chiang Mai workshop, casting sharp, geometric shadows of a hanging wicker chair onto a sun-warmed stone wall. A local artisan, barefoot and focused, uses a brass burnisher on a curved wooden bowl resting on a scarred workbench. Beside the bowl, a clay watering jug and a plastic bottle sit idle, their surfaces gleaming with reflected heat. The scene is layered with the textures of rough masonry against smooth, polished wood. In the background, peg rails hold various hand tools, waiting for use.
