Kyoto Tofu Vendor Pressing Fresh Blocks

Directly overhead, a wooden press dominates the frame as hands compress white tofu blocks between layers of cloth. The deep shadow of the Nishiki market stall swallows the background, while a sharp rim of cool, gray light traces the edges of the vendor's dark sleeves and the wet surface of the soy curds. Early autumn air settles on the damp stone floor visible at the periphery. Heavy overcast skies filter the light into a flat, diffuse gray that highlights the texture of the pressing cloth and the smooth, yielding surface of the fresh tofu. A wooden handle rests on the grain of the table, and a small puddle of whey glistens near the corner of the press. The vendor's fingers press down, leaving faint indentations in the soft white mass.
