Toraja Buffalo Parade Jakarta Twilight Square
by Aubrey Smith
Cool blue twilight washes over a crowded public square near Blok M in Jakarta, where a procession of water buffalo moves slowly across the pavement. The animals, their dark hides reflecting the dim ambient light, stand in a staggered line with heavy horns curving upward. Handlers in traditional woven attire guide the herd through the open space, their colorful sashes visible against the grey sky. Overcast clouds hang low, diffusing the fading daylight into a soft, uniform glow that eliminates harsh shadows. Spectators line the edges of the square, their silhouettes receding into the background layers. The wet asphalt glistens slightly, mirroring the pale sky and the dark forms of the buffalo. A large ceremonial headdress rests on the lead animal's back, its intricate beadwork catching the last vestiges of evening light.
