Tobacco Leaf Drying in Silvery Winter Light

by Ivan Cantu

Silvery winter light washes over a single tobacco leaf suspended in a rustic curing barn near Bulawayo. The leaf displays a deep, textured green surface marked by prominent veins that fan out toward the jagged edges. Tiny droplets of water rest on the waxy cuticle, catching the dim ambient glow of the late night sky. The dry season air leaves the leaf slightly curled, revealing a matte finish against the rough, weathered wood of the hanging rack. Rain from a brief sun shower creates a sheen that reflects the pale overhead light, showing the organic structure of the plant. One water droplet rests at the very tip of the leaf, trembling on the edge of the frame.
