Tobacco Leaves Hanging in Barbados Barn

by Beverly Miller

Steel-blue twilight washes over the open interior of a rustic curing barn in Barbados. Rows of cured tobacco leaves dangle from rough wooden rafters, their edges blurred by falling rain. Below, square hay bales stack in tight, orderly columns along the dirt floor, their golden hues muted by the gray rain. The air hangs heavy with moisture, visible as a fine mist clinging to the hanging foliage. Rain streaks run down the wooden beams, creating dark, wet paths that contrast with the pale, drying leaves. The entire structure sits exposed to the elements, a functional shelter defined by its utility rather than decoration. Water drips steadily from the roof edges, pooling on the packed earth where the hay rests.
