Tobacco Barn Hanging Leaves Ethiopia Field in across a harvested grain field in Ethiopia

Tobacco Barn Hanging Leaves Ethiopia Field

by Cathy Hammond

Stripped tobacco leaves drape in dense rows from rough wooden rafters inside a rustic curing barn. The wood beams show weathered gray grain and dark knots where moisture has settled. Outside, the structure opens to a vast harvested grain field where stubble creates a textured carpet of gold and brown. A heavy overcast sky presses low, diffusing the late afternoon light into a soft, even glow that eliminates harsh shadows. The cool season air is suggested by the stillness of the hanging foliage and the muted tones of the distant horizon. Layers of depth recede from the barn's dark interior to the open field, ending at a faint tree line where the earth meets the gray clouds. at the edge is a single green leaf tip hanging near the doorway, catching the flat light.
