Tibetan Ruin Staircase in Golden Night Light

by Isabella Townsend

Dust motes hang suspended in a sharp beam of gold evening light that cuts through the open roof of a crumbling Tibetan nave. The stone staircase, worn smooth by centuries of foot traffic, ascends diagonally across the frame, its edges softened by erosion. String lights draped along the upper walls cast a warm, artificial glow that competes with the natural twilight filtering from the deepest night sky above. Rough, weathered surfaces of the masonry contrast with the delicate, glowing particles dancing in the air. Late summer heat is absent; instead, the cool stone absorbs the fading light. The staircase ends abruptly at a broken archway where the night sky presses in, revealing the resilience of the structure against the encroaching darkness. One crack in the lower step catches the light, highlighting the texture of the ancient rock.
