Fluorescent Light Through Bottles on Tiled Stair Hall Shelf

by Dominick McFadden

Directly overhead, the view reveals a dusty wooden shelf running along a tiled stairwell wall in Lanzhou. Several glass bottles sit in a row, their surfaces coated in fine, dry dust that catches the harsh overhead fluorescent glow. Condensation beads rest on the necks and shoulders of the glass, distinct against the dry air of the early spring night. The artificial light fractures through the liquid inside, casting jagged, geometric shards of pale green and amber onto the white ceramic tiles below. Each shard ends abruptly at the edge of a grout line, creating a mosaic of fragmented color that shifts with the angle of the bottles. The dust motes hang suspended in the beam, illuminating the texture of the rough wood and the smooth, wet glass in sharp contrast.
