Suspended Lanterns Over Desert Mesa Lightning

by Julius Francis

Soft midday light washes over a flat desert mesa beneath fast-moving cloud bands. The ground holds the texture of early spring dust, pale and dry. Above, jagged lightning bolts streak horizontally across a perfectly clear blue sky. Instead of rain or storm clouds, hundreds of glowing lanterns hang suspended in the air at giant scale, filling the upper atmosphere. These luminous orbs vary in size, some resting near the horizon and others high above the mesa ridges. Their warm amber glow contrasts with the cool blue of the sky and the white-blue flash of the lightning. The scene stretches deep into the distance, where the mesa edges fade into a hazy horizon line. A cluster of lanterns near the center reflects a faint, sharp light on the dry, cracked earth below.
