Surreal Tree on City Hall Wall

by Erik Dillon

A wooden table sits empty on the stone steps of City Hall in Westminster, holding a single public hearing microphone. Behind it, a thick wall supports a massive tree growing perfectly horizontally, its branches fully leafed and healthy despite the late autumn season. The sunset casts the microphone and table into sharp silhouette against the dramatic, cloud-filled sky. Sunlight glints off the metal mesh of the microphone head while the horizontal tree trunk rests firmly against the grey stone masonry. The roots of the impossible growth seem to merge directly into the building's facade. One leaf catches the dying light on the very tip of the highest branch.
