Horizontal Zinnia Tree and Bees at Dawn in along a game trail near Nanchang

Horizontal Zinnia Tree and Bees at Dawn

by Christopher Lara

Low-hanging clouds drift above a zinnia garden where a fully leafed tree grows horizontally out of a weathered stone wall. Bees swarm the vibrant orange and yellow blooms in early autumn light. The sun casts long, sharp shadows across the green trail beside the wall. Thick branches extend outward parallel to the ground, defying gravity while remaining rooted in the masonry. Each flower head tilts slightly under the weight of visiting insects. The horizontal trunk displays rough bark textures against the smooth wall surface. Dust motes catch the first rays of sunrise, illuminating the bees' wings as they hover near the petals. One bee rests on a lower leaf, its wings folded tight against the impossible geometry.
