Sun Dog Over Namibian Dunes at Dawn in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads in Namibia

Sun Dog Over Namibian Dunes at Dawn

by Edith Greene

A brilliant white sun dog floats above a desert road where the floor abruptly shifts from polished grey tiles to rippling golden sand dunes. Stacked thunderheads pile high on the horizon, their dark bases at the base of the scene against the soft, diffused light of first light. The impossible transition creates a stark visual boundary, slicing the room-like space into a wild, open landscape. Wind whips through the dunes, blurring the sand edges while the tiles remain smooth and rigid. Silhouetted against the bright sky, the landforms clarify the massive scale of the clouds. A sharp, dark shadow from the cloud formation falls across the seam where the manufactured floor meets the natural desert.
