Predawn Reflections on Wet Cobblestones

Soft tungsten lamplight spills across the polished wet cobblestones of a restored train terminal near Pingyao. Long, amber streaks of light stretch vertically through the water pooling on the ancient stone, creating a mirror-like surface that doubles the glow of overhead fixtures. The early autumn darkness presses against the high vaulted ceiling, leaving the lower floor in deep shadow. Cool gray tones of the stone contrast with the warm, glowing yellow of the lamps. Small, sharp highlights dance along the uneven edges of the wet stones. Dark negative space surrounds the glowing streaks, showing the stillness of the predawn hour. The reflection ends abruptly at the edge of a dry, textured stone slab.
