Steam vents from manhole cover in Oaxaca rain

by Matteo Goodwin

Grey concrete slabs of a crosswalk glisten with fresh rain under the heavy shadow of an elevated train line. White steam billows upward from a circular iron manhole cover, swirling into the dappled light filtering through nearby leaves. The metal grate shows signs of rust and wear, against the wet, dark pavement. Above, the steel supports of the train track create a geometric cage of shadows across the street. A large green leaf hangs in the immediate foreground, slightly out of focus, framing the rising vapor. Puddles reflect the pale sky and the dark underside of the railway structure. The steam dissipates slowly against the clear morning air, marking the turn of the season with a quiet, damp presence.
