Steam Train on Winter Salt Flats Night in along a switchback approach in Northwest Territories

Steam Train on Winter Salt Flats Night

by Lincoln Ritter

Thick mist blankets the endless summer light of the Northwest Territories, softening the edges of a steam train frozen mid-motion on a switchback approach. The locomotive cuts a sharp diagonal line across the frame, its dark metal body contrasting against the pale, glowing salt flats. Faint ground glow illuminates the steam plume, which hangs suspended in the air without dissipating, caught in the stillness of the night. Starlight falls through the heavy fog, casting a cool, silvery sheen on the wet salt surface. The train wheels rest on rails that disappear into the mist, anchoring the heavy machinery to the flat, white expanse. One beam of light reflects off a polished brass valve on the engine's side.
