Steam Train Crossing Rwanda Salt Flats at Dusk in on a wind-open causeway in Rwanda

Steam Train Crossing Rwanda Salt Flats at Dusk

by Javier Vinson

Copper-toned light spills across the flat expanse of salt pans in Rwanda, illuminating a steam train moving along a wind-open causeway. The locomotive, heavy with mud and frost clinging to its black metal bodywork, pushes forward with visible weight. A thin layer of atmospheric fog hovers just above the cracked, white salt crust, softening the horizon line where the sky meets the earth. The train's dark silhouette contrasts sharply against the glowing, pale ground. Rust streaks run down the side of the tender, catching the fading warmth of the sun. The wheels sit low on the tracks, leaving a faint trail of disturbed salt dust behind them as they cross the desolate, open landscape. at the edge is the steam venting from the stack, dissolving instantly into the cool evening air.
