Steam Train on Salt Flats Evening Haze
by Nova Sargent
Soft light after rain washes the pale salt flats in Oslo, where a steam train cuts a sharp diagonal line across the white expanse. The late afternoon sun sits low, casting long, cool shadows that stretch across the crystalline crust. Thick white steam billows from the locomotive, hanging motionless in the freezing polar night air before dissolving into the clear sky. The metal surfaces of the engine gleam with wet reflections, contrasting against the rough, granular texture of the salt. The train moves with purpose, its wheels churning up small puffs of vapor that drift horizontally. A faint trail of soot stains the pristine white ground near the tracks, marking the path of the heavy machinery. at the edge is the dark, wet rim of the smokestack catching the last golden ray against the blue-grey horizon.
