Steam Locomotive Crossing Foggy Harbor Bridge

Deep shadows cloak the massive iron wheels and boiler of the steam locomotive as it traverses the metal trusses of the bridge. A thin rim of pale light outlines the engine's silhouette against the midnight fog hanging over the harbor mouth near Palma Soriano. Early winter chill is visible in the way the steam condenses instantly into thick white plumes that mingle with the sea spray suspended in the air. The dark water below reflects only faint glimmers from the distant shore lights. Heavy rivets and weathered steel plates define the bridge structure, while the locomotive's smokestack releases a steady column of vapor that drifts horizontally. The wet metal surfaces gleam faintly where the rim light catches the edges of the railings. One bolt on the coupling rod catches the dim light.
